How to properly use a steam iron. Pressure

In order for a thing to look perfect after ironing, it is important not only to use a high-quality iron, but also to set the temperature correctly.

The iron temperature switch has three designations: one dot, two or three. Each of them corresponds to a certain heating temperature of the sole. Sometimes there are names of fabrics next to the dots (linen, silk, wool, etc.), which helps to quickly navigate while ironing:

  • One dot - silk
  • Two - wool
  • Three - cotton, linen.

To the left of the first dot, the designation nylon may be present, since for synthetics the ironing temperature must be less than the minimum.

What is the minimum and maximum temperature of the iron

It must be said that the low, medium and maximum temperature of the soleplate of the iron vary depending on its model. The position of the switch, indicated by one dot, corresponds to a temperature from 64 to 133 ° C, two - from 90 to 191 ° C, three - from 144 to 229 ° C.

To find out which indicators are relevant specifically for your iron, look at the instructions and find the appropriate item.

Some modern models of irons are equipped with an LCD display that shows the current temperature, which allows you to set it more accurately.

How to set the temperature correctly depending on the type of fabric

For each fabric, there is an optimal temperature for ironing, which is indicated by the manufacturer on the label. In order for ironing to always be as efficient as possible, it is important to be able to decipher these icons.

The product can be ironed at any temperature.
High temperature ironing up to 200 °C.
It is found on products made of polyester, polyacrylonitrile fabrics. The maximum temperature is 140 °C.
This icon indicates that the product is made of delicate fabric, which must be ironed at a temperature not exceeding 130 ° C.
The temperature must not exceed 110 °C. It is found on things made of polyamide, acetate, nylon, viscose.
Do not iron or steam.
Can be ironed but cannot be steamed.

Recommendations for choosing the ironing temperature for various fabrics

Often there is a situation when there is no label with care recommendations for things. In these cases, practical advice will come in handy.

Linen

The item must first be turned inside out and ironed at a temperature of 180–200 °C. The best result is achieved when the fabric is damp. In the process of ironing, do not be afraid to press on the iron and use steam.

If the thing has an admixture of cotton, then the iron should not be heated above 180 ° C. It is worth considering that decorative elements (for example, embroideries) are often made of synthetic materials, so they should only be ironed from the inside out.

What to do if the matter is very dense and does not iron properly? Such things are ironed additionally from the front side, it is possible at the same temperature, but always through gauze. If the product is starched, then the temperature must be reduced by 10 - 20 degrees.

Wool

Wool does not stand high temperatures, so the optimal mode for it is 100 - 120 °C. This applies to woven wool, and it is better not to iron knitted items at all. If you really want to iron your favorite sweater, then you need to do it from the inside out, without pressing the iron, so as not to stretch the material. The drape coat is ironed at 140 -170 ° C, always with steaming.

Cotton

This material must be ironed at a temperature of 170 - 180 degrees. Like linen, cotton is best processed when it is not completely dry, or pre-moistened with a spray bottle. You can use steam.

Silk

This is a very delicate material, which should be ironed as carefully as possible. It does not tolerate temperatures above 60 - 80 ° C, as well as steaming. If it becomes necessary to iron through the fabric, then it is worth using thin cotton, but not gauze (ugly traces may remain on the silk product). When processing through the fabric, the temperature can be increased by 20 °C.

Viscose

The maximum temperature is 120 ° C, light steaming is allowed.

Knitwear

Temperature regime - medium or minimum. To avoid stretching the fabric, it is better to steam the knitwear in a vertical position instead of ironing.

Nylon

It is the most delicate fabric in terms of ironing. Best Option- do not iron nylon items at all, but use steam. But if you really want to, then you can stroke at 60 - 80 ° C.

Remember - terry bathrobes and towels are not ironed at all because the material loses its softness and becomes rough!

It should be said that the ironing temperature largely depends not only on the composition of the fabric, but also on its texture, the presence of patterns, embroidery, and so on. Therefore, if there is any doubt, then at first it is better to set a gentle temperature regime, and then increase the temperature to the desired level.

Features of heating irons

Every housewife knows that a good iron should have the following qualities:

  • uniform heating of the sole;
  • moderate weight;
  • smooth glide.

It is very important that the temperature set for ironing fabrics on the device is maintained evenly over the entire surface of the sole. This indicator largely depends on the material of manufacture. For these purposes are used:

Most appliances have in their design components such as a heating element, a thermostat, a signal lamp and a steam function.

Each operating mode of the iron has 3 temperature settings: nominal, maximum and minimum. The data are presented in the table.

Linen clothing has excellent breathable and heat-conducting properties. At proper care retains its qualities for a long time. In order for things made of linen not to lose their original appearance, they require special care.

How to iron linen:

  1. The temperature of the iron during ironing should correspond to 180-200 ° C (3 points).
  2. Turn inside out.
  3. Keep clothing moist. It is better to process almost immediately after washing or use a spray bottle.
  4. Intensive pressure on the iron.
  5. It is allowed to turn on the steam function.

High-quality ironing of natural linen requires high temperature and humidity. We must not forget that this fabric is easily wrinkled, so it will be quite difficult to achieve an ideal result.

If the material contains additions of other fibers, for example, cotton, then the temperature should not be set above 180 ° C.

Particular attention should be paid to the presence of decorative elements. Embroideries, patterns are ironed exclusively from the inside and only through gauze. Direct contact with the soleplate of the device is not allowed.

Very tight clothes are ironed on both sides, but using gauze. For starched things, the temperature should be reduced by about 10-20 ° C from the maximum.

Cotton

Clothing made from this material is the most popular. Cotton is a rather dense fabric, which perfectly absorbs moisture and passes air well. Bed linen, dresses, shirts and many other things are made from it. In order to qualitatively iron products, you should follow these recommendations:

  1. Cotton ironing temperature 170–180°C.
  2. Do not dry completely. Treat wet or with a spray bottle.
  3. Press hard on the iron.
  4. use of wet steam.

In its pure form, cotton is quite difficult to iron. The process requires high temperature and strong pressure. If the item contains an addition in the form of polyester, the heating of the sole must be reduced to 110 ° C.

Products without drawings and embroidery are processed from the outside, in the presence of decorative elements or paints, clothes must be turned inside out. For maximum effect, follow the instructions on the clothing label.

Silk is a delicate material that requires careful handling. It dries quickly and has a soft texture. The fabric is very sensitive to external influences, so you need to know the main rules for ironing silk.

  1. Silk ironing temperature 60–80 °C (one dot or corresponding inscription on the instrument panel).
  2. Steam is prohibited. Hard-to-remove stains may remain.
  3. Use a thin cloth, but not gauze. She also leaves stains on silk. In this case, a temperature increase of 10–20 is acceptable.
  4. The direction of movement is vertical. Otherwise, the fabric may stretch.

How to iron an oversized silk dress or shirt:

  1. Hang the product on the shoulders.
  2. Cover with a thin, slightly damp cloth.
  3. Heat the appliance to the temperature indicated on the label. If it is not possible to view the information, then set the mode to go or 1 point on the iron.
  4. Slowly drive the steamer at a distance of 4-7 cm from the dress in vertical movements.

The same rules should be followed when working with chiffon and polyester.

Wool

Soft, natural material who is afraid of exposure to high temperatures. For safe ironing, follow these rules:

  1. The temperature for ironing wool is 100–120 °C.
  2. Turn inside out.
  3. Continuous maintenance of the iron is better to replace it with a rearrangement from place to place. This method will avoid tissue deformation.
  4. Use extra moisture in the form of cotton fabric.

Woolen things are very whimsical and do not always tolerate ironing. Carefully study the recommendations on the labels. It is better to give preference to vertical steaming for the ironing process.

Viscose

To avoid damage to clothing made from this material, use the following Recommendations:

  1. Temperature maximum 120 °C.
  2. It is forbidden to wet, otherwise there will be stains.
  3. Process only from the inside out.
  4. Application of damp gauze or cotton cloth.

chintz

Lightweight, thin, breathable material. For effective ironing you need:

  1. Do not raise the temperature above 170°C.
  2. Iron from the front side of the product.
  3. Press hard on the iron.
  4. Extra hydration.

Correctly chosen temperature mode of ironing is the key to obtaining an excellent result.

http://alladvices.com ru/dom-i-byt/garderob/temperatura-glazhki-tkanej. html

Temperature regime of ironing always set depending on the type of fabric. It is better to start with the minimum temperatures, increasing as necessary to the limit value.

Many manufacturers foresee doubts of housewives in choosing the temperature regime for ironing and instead of degrees they write hint phrases on the iron relay: “cotton”, “linen”, etc. And if you put the iron in steam mode, there will be fewer wrinkles on the fabric.

Be sure to run the iron a couple of times over any fabric - suddenly there are stains and traces of water on the soleplate of the iron, which can be accidentally transferred to your wardrobe item.

First of all, pay attention to the clothing labels - they contain all the information about the care of the product: how to wash, how to dry, and, finally, at what temperature to iron:

The label is lost - it doesn’t matter, the table of ironing modes will tell you at what temperature this or that fabric should be ironed:

Table of temperature regimes for ironing various types of fabrics

Textile Temperature Steam Iron pressure Fabric Features
pure cotton 140 - 170 degrees wet steam high pressure ironing need hydration
Cotton with polyester 110 degrees a small amount of steam usual see cotton, polyester
Polyester temperature mode "minimum" or "silk" no steam lung iron with a slightly heated iron, because material melts easily
Compressed products 110 degrees no steam usual
Viscose 120 degrees, temperature mode "silk" a little steam usual Viscose should not be wetted, as there is a high probability of water stains. Iron lightly damp viscose only from the wrong side or through a wet thin fabric from the wrong side.
Cotton fabric with linen 180 degrees a lot of steam strong iron pressure see cotton, linen
linen fabric 180-200 degrees a lot of steam strong pressure linen should be ironed with a hot iron from the inside, using a humidifier
Silk 60-80 degrees usual Silk is looked at with a dry iron, through a thin damp cloth, but not gauze (it will leave traces); iron along the shared thread (vertically) to avoid stretching the product. When ironing, you can not additionally moisturize - stains will remain.
Nylon Better than a ferry. But if necessary, iron carefully at 60-80 degrees vertical steam ironing After washing, nylon usually does not need to be ironed. Material can melt: all nylon items are very sensitive to heat
Chiffon 60-80 degrees, gentle ironing at low temperature no steam light pressure of the iron Do not spray clothes with a spray bottle (water stains may remain). Iron through damp gauze. The sole of the iron should be flat and free of sticky particles - puffs may remain on delicate fabrics.
Wool and semi-wool 100-120 degrees through fabric vertical steaming of wool is preferable to ironing lung - Ironing wool through a damp cotton cloth. - Steam embossed items. - Do not iron fluffy woolen products.
Denim fabrics Coarse: 180-200 degrees, Soft cotton jeans: 150 degrees steam strong Jeans need to be ironed from the wrong side, when they are still slightly damp. On the front side - through gauze or fabric.
Tweed 140-170 degrees from the wrong side through a damp cloth a lot of steam it is better not to iron the view, but to steam it with a vertical steamer
Drap 140-170 degrees, but better with a steam iron or a steam cleaner a lot of steam difficult to iron, it is better to steam
chintz 140 – 170 degrees, use steam iron at max. temperatures a lot of steam strong pressure ironed on the front side, pre-moistened
Terry cloth (towels, sheets, bathrobes) do not iron from ironing becomes hard and does not absorb moisture well
Knitwear minimum or average temperature steaming knitwear correctly with a steam iron in a suspended position do not press, so as not to crush the villi it is necessary to iron in the direction of the loops from the wrong side
