Calvin Richard Klein.

Who would have thought in the distant war year of 1942 that the second son of the Kleins, Hungarian Jewish emigrants, Calvin Richard, was destined to become great.

Although when the question "What do you want to do in life?" little Kelvin replied: "Sewing clothes", no one was surprised. From childhood, the boy was surrounded by female attention and spent days on end in a textile store, where his grandmother Molly worked, and his mother Flor worked as a dressmaker. Therefore, Kelvin was familiar with what patterns are and "what they are eaten with" from young nails.

Such a hobby did not evoke warm feelings and responses from his peers - the boy was a constant object of ridicule. Calvin's only friend during this period was Barry Schwartz.

After high school, Calvin was determined to get a design education. And so he enters the New York High School of Industrial Design. It should be noted that Klein's teachers did not even suspect that there was a genius among their students, considering Kelvin to be a rather mediocre fashion designer. But after school, the future star continues her studies and goes to the New York Fashion Institute of Technology, during her studies, in order to somehow make ends meet, she works as a street artist.

Klein's first job "in profile" was the position of an assistant at the New York Clothing Center. But the routine and meager salary did not encourage him to continue his career there.

1964 brought a change in his personal life to Calvin's life - Klein married his girlfriend Jane Center, who gave birth to his daughter Marcy. But after 10 years, the marriage will break up and in 1986 Kelvin's wife will be his assistant Kelly Rector, with whom the designer will live until 1997.

The next round in Kelvin's career happened when the future couturier almost despaired of realizing himself as a creative person. But thanks to his father, who found the words and encouraged his son during a difficult period, and his devoted friend Barry Schwartz, who believed in his talent and strength and found money, the brand was created Calvin Klein.

Models of the new brand were distinguished by a simple cut and discreet colors, which later became the brand's signature brand.

For the first models of women's coats, sketches sketched by Kelvin at previous jobs and rejected by the employer were very useful.

Mr. Klein received his first major order ... by accident. It was all the fault of an inaccurately recorded address from a buyer for a large department store: he had the wrong floor, but when he saw Kelvin's models, he placed an order for 50 thousand dollars.

Needless to say, how much this accident inspired Klein. New collections came out one after another. The fashion designer worked around the clock. And the result was not long in coming: the collections diverged with a bang, and in 1973 Kelvin was awarded his first ever design award. Coty Award.

Creating a coat turned out to be not so profitable. And the real salvation of the fashion designer was jeans and ... a scandal.

1978 An advertising campaign for a jeans collection starring 13-year-old Brooke Shields literally blew up the public. It was even honored with a discussion in the Parliament. The fashion designer was accused of all mortal sins from the distribution of pornography to pedophilia. But the words that flew from the lips of a young nymphet: "You know what's between me and Calvin Klein jeans? Nothing!" did their job - sales skyrocketed. And the jeans themselves were nicknamed "Kelvins".

In the same year, blackmailers kidnap Kelvin's daughter for ransom. But thanks to the empathy and support of the public, as well as the willingness of the fashion designer to hand over the ransom to the kidnappers, Marcy will be returned safe and sound.

After that, the scandal became an integral part of history. Calvin Klein. The designer has repeatedly had to publicly apologize for the "ambiguity" of his images. But at the same time to collect an incredible harvest from sales.

The second milestone in Calvin Klein's career was men's underwear, which the fashion designer managed to elevate to the rank of not only a convenient accessory, but also an object of worship for all fashionistas. And what is characteristic, the maestro remained true to his principle - simplicity and conciseness.

Now the concept of "unisex" is quite ordinary and it is difficult to surprise with this. But it arose precisely thanks to Calvin Klein, who released the fragrance cK one and became a pioneer in such a market segment as unisex products. And played a big role here. Kate Moss, which became the personification of this phenomenon.

The fans of the brand are Sandra Bullock, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston, Helen Hunt, despite the fact that now Calvin Klein is no longer its owner.

The designer himself evaluates his success as follows: " I love simplicity. I like cleanliness. I love everything modern. But it should excite the imagination and be interesting. Fashion is changeable, but its philosophy remains unchanged for me: clothes should be truly modern and make a woman truly beautiful.".

Remember the curiosity from the cult comedy "Back to the Future"? Marty McFly's young mother (during the hero's journey into the past) saw the inscription on his underpants and began to call the "alien" Calvin Klein? At the time when this movie was filmed, the fashion designer was at the peak of popularity. The biography of Calvin Klein is like the embodiment of the notorious American dream ...

Biography of Calvin Klein

If there is both talent and perseverance

He was born into a poor Jewish family living "in the backyard" of the Big Apple, in the Bronx. The father, a small businessman, named his son, who was born on November 19, 1942, Kelvin Richard. The boy showed artistic inclinations early (he painted really well, this skill came in handy later, when Kelvin had to earn extra money with street portraits). Therefore, as a teenager, he became a student at the Higher School of Art, and after that the creative biography of Calvin Klein continued at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

For almost six years, the future famous couturier wandered from one New York fashion designer to another, but the role of an assistant did not suit the ambitious guy. “I really like that in our country everyone has a chance to fly very high if you have talent and are ready to work hard,” Klein himself later said. He took full advantage of this chance, because perseverance and efficiency (as well as the talent bestowed from above) were not to be occupied by the novice designer.

Lady Luck

And our hero, as they say, smiled at Lady Luck herself. When Calvin, in coordination with friend Barry Schwartz, sewed the first collection, he received permission to show it in the building of a large hotel. In the same place (but on a different floor) was a luxurious boutique. Somehow, its director made a mistake on the floor and saw Klein's work. The businessman really liked the models of the young designer, he immediately placed an order for a large amount. However, maybe it's just a legend?

Jeans on the catwalk!

When Klein had money, he was seriously swirled by the bohemian whirlpool. He became friends with Andy Warhol, was a regular at the controversial Studio 54 nightclub, drank heavily and experimented with illegal psychotropic substances. Already in adulthood, he himself will call these years of burning life "insane". But even in times of serious spree, the fashion designer did not stop working. Couturier jeans became wildly popular in the late 1970s - before him, the representatives of "High Fashion" considered denim clothing to be rather plebeian. Klein enlisted young talent Brooke Shields as a model and came up with a sexy ad with the slogan "There's nothing between me and my jeans!" He was almost reproached for child pornography, but the success was evident!

Preaching unisex

After treatment in a specialized center, the “crazy years” came to an end. The fashion designer has settled down. But the recipe for success remained the same - in the early 1990s, half-naked Kate Moss and rapper Marky Mark (future Hollywood star Mark Wahlberg) became the heroes of his new advertising posters. They were slender, young, and both wore Klein's clothes.

It turns out that Klein became the ideological successor of couturiers who preached unisex. The youth met this idea of the master with enthusiasm, it turned out that jeans, jackets, caps from Calvin Klein can be worn by both girls and boys. The adults shook their finger at the impudent designer again. They also reminded the American of his courage: in 1995, teenage posters and commercials advertising the master's clothes were banned. And four years later, posters were called too frivolous, which showed a new line of teenage underwear. He just always knew how to "keep his nose in the wind" and knew what the public wanted from him.

By the 2000s, he had played enough of these games, and a new round took place in the biography of Calvin Klein: the couturier sold his company. The deal was not cheap: $430 million.

Personal life of Calvin Klein

The first pancake is lumpy

When the fashion designer got married (in 1964), his bohemian lifestyle could not but affect his relationship with his wife Jane. True, they tried to be exemplary parents for their daughter Marcy. But ten years later, a divorce followed. A few years later, Marcy will survive the terrible: she was kidnapped and demanded a ransom, but everything ended well.

20 years of marriage and ... young boyfriends

In 1986, the master got married again, but the evil tongues did not let up, claiming that he just wants to hide his homosexuality. The second wife of the fashion designer was his assistant Kelly Rector. Calvin Klein's personal life then seemed cloudless. Together with his young wife, he settled in a new mansion on the coast. Bad habits were done away with: they were replaced by swimming and jogging on the beach. With Kelly, Calvin lived for a long time, but having celebrated the 20th anniversary of marriage, he put an end to it. And later it turned out that the scandalous fashion designer really had boyfriends. Among them is a young guy-model Nick Gruber ...

American designer Calvin Klein has repeatedly excited the public with non-standard solutions and ideas. The couturier gained popularity thanks to the ingenious and completely inimitable advertising campaigns of his product collections.

Childhood and youth

Calvin Klein was born on November 19, 1942, the son of Jewish immigrants living in New York. Even as a teenager, he began to show interest in the profession of fashion designer and often drew outfits for men and women. After receiving a certificate of secondary education, Calvin entered the New York High School of Art and Design, after which he continued his studies at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

In the mid-1960s, Klein worked in various New York ateliers. There he trained as a tailor and fashion designer. By the end of the 1960s, Klein was ripe for starting his own firm. His friend Barry Schwartz provided the necessary capital ($10,000) and Calvin Klein Ltd was founded in 1968. Schwartz handled the business while Klein handled the design.

Initially, Schwartz and Klein's company made raincoats (at first they were sewn by a single seamstress), but subsequently the scope of activities expanded. So, since the early 1970s, the company has already produced sports and casual clothing. The rapid success of the brand was due, among other things, to the following factor: the owner of a popular clothing store somehow accidentally visited Klein's establishment and placed an order immediately for $50,000.

Such an influx of funds accelerated the development of the enterprise, and Kelvin quickly gained popularity as a lover of laconic clothing, with a tight, neat cut.

From the biography of the fashion designer, it is known that from the very first years of his success he used the money he earned and his position for his own pleasure. Even at a time when the advertising of his collections did not yet cause collective hysteria among American moralists, he was by no means a role model.

The couturier did not miss a single party in the popular New York nightclub of the 70s "Studio 54", where he roamed all night in the company of Bianca Jagger and other bohemian characters. The designer drank heavily, experimented with drugs endlessly, and his personal life was extremely chaotic. Subsequently, Klein called these years of his life insane.

Fashion and design

In the early 80s, an advertising campaign for Klein jeans was launched. Prior to this, jeans were considered clothes that were not worthy of the attention of fashion designers. Kelvin changed the public's mind about this element of the wardrobe. The jeans were promoted with an aggressive and bold advertising campaign. The model broadcast from the screens: “Nothing comes between me and my Calvins” (“There is nothing between me and my jeans”). It is known that in the first week after the launch of the advertising campaign, 200 thousand pairs of jeans were sold.

In parallel with clothing and accessories (bags, scarves, belts), the perfume line also developed. In the 1980s, Obsession eau de toilette came out, then Eternity, and a couple of months later, Escape. Also appeared on sale and glasses under the brand name "Calvin Klein", and in the 1990s - home textiles.

In 1992, the fashion designer again shook the moral foundations of America by launching a collection of underwear. On the new posters of Klein, a semi-naked aspiring model sat in an embrace with rapper Marky Mark (future Hollywood star).

The youth greeted Klein's idea with a bang, and the older generation hastened to accuse Kelvin of using minors in filming close to pornographic.

True, here the moralists missed. At the time of filming, Kate Moss was already 18 years old, therefore, there could be no talk of sexual exploitation of minors, but the public did not care anymore. In August 1995, advertising posters and videos of Klein were banned from further display.

In 1993, Kelvin received an award from the Council of Fashion Designers of the United States, and in the nomination for both men's and women's clothing. In the same 1993, the fashion designer received the America's Best Designer award and launched the world's first unisex perfume, CK One. However, in the 1990s, Klein gradually retired and did not design all the clothes that were sold under his name.

In 2003, a deal was concluded on the sale of the Calvin Klein brand group to the American company PVH (Phillips-Van Heusen Corporation). The Calvin Klein clothing collections, regardless of the year, had a simple, concise design with neat, strict lines. The main target audience of the brand is people under the age of 30, but many things are also suitable for older people.

The range includes not only clothes, but also accessories, shoes, underwear, eau de toilette (the most popular perfume is Euphoria perfume). If desired, in Calvin Klein stores you can dress from head to toe. At the moment, "Calvin Klein" is worn by many Hollywood stars:, and.

Personal life

Calvin Klein has been on both sides of the barricades: he had long-term relationships with both women and men. The eminent designer married for the first time in 1964. Then a girl named Jane Senter became the chosen one of the trendsetter.

When the fashion designer got married, his bohemian lifestyle could not but affect his relationship with his wife. True, it is worth recognizing that the avid party-goer struggled to be an exemplary father to his daughter Marcy, but as a result, habits took over. After ten years of married life, the former lovers divorced. Now the daughter of Calvin Klein is the producer of the show "Saturday Night Live".

In 1986, the master again played a wedding, but evil tongues did not let up, claiming that the couturier just wants to hide his homosexuality. The second wife of the fashion designer was his assistant Kelly Rector. Calvin's personal life then seemed cloudless. The crazy years came to an end, and after a course of treatment in a specialized clinic, he said goodbye to drug addiction.

Together with his young wife, Klein settled in a new mansion on the coast. Bad habits were replaced by swimming and jogging on the beach. Despite the idyll that reigned in the relationship, having celebrated the 20th anniversary of the marriage, the master put an end to it.

Later it turned out that the reason for the breakup was Calvin's affair with one of his fashion models. It is known that in 2010 Klein met with a former pornographic actor and bisexual Nick Gruber, who was 48 years younger than him. The couple separated in 2012 due to Gruber's substance abuse issues.

According to the Western media, now Kelvin is not alone. He has a romantic relationship with fashion model Kevin Baker. The young man for a couple of years was considered the main muse of the designer. Together with Klein, he repeatedly attended social events. Also, the paparazzi often photographed the couple during a joint pastime. These pictures became the reason for the spread of rumors about the novel.

Calvin Klein now

Back in 2003, Kelvin sold his underwear, footwear, watch, shirt and perfume business to the Phillips-Van Heusen Corporation.

In early August 2016, designer Raf Simons became the creative director of Calvin Klein and presented his first collection to fashion lovers. The show "Calvin Klein: Fall-Winter 2017/2018" was called by critics an ode to America: the collection, like a mosaic, is very eclectic.

According to the eminent couturier, it reflects different eras, different styles and images. So, vinyl raincoats and dresses are a reminder of pop art and Andy Warhol, denim combinations are a nod to the founder of Calvin Klein, cowboy boots and a US flag in the form of a print are a tribute to American culture.

It is worth noting that the collection turned out to be extremely versatile. Men's images alternated with women's, while the clothes were almost identical. Tops, straight-cut coats, loose trouser suits, leather and denim sets fell in love with the audience present at the show.

To this day, Calvin Klein products can be ordered on the official website of the company. Also, the clothes of this brand are presented in the catalogs of numerous online stores.

Condition assessment

For 2017, Klein is in the top 25 richest people in Hollywood. It is known that in addition to the designer, whose income is $ 700 million a year, this list also includes actors, and.

Calvin Klein was born on November 19, 1942 in one of the most famous cities in the United States of America - New York in the family of the owner of a small grocery store. The area where Calvin spent his childhood was not the most fashionable in the city, and this fact only pushed the ambitious young man to realize the “Great American Dream” - to become famous and create his own company. "That's just what I like about the United States," Klein recalled years later. “Everyone has a chance here if you have the necessary ability and willingness to work hard.”

From early childhood, the boy loved to draw, and then he learned to sew. And although he showed interest in the family business, he chose his mother and grandmother as role models. Calvin was taught by his grandmother to sew on a sewing machine, and his elegant mother shaped his taste by regularly visiting her tailors and ready-to-wear shops with him. Conversations of women about fashions and styles constantly accompanied the boy. Klein himself claims that from the age of 5 he decided to become a fashion designer. Therefore, after graduating from school, he did not have painful thoughts about where to go to study further.

He graduated from the High School of Art as one of the best, then in 1960 - 1962 he studied at the New York Fashion Institute of Technology (Fashion Institute of Technology). Following a cherished dream, Klein not only masters the theory, but at the same time undergoes practice in the atelier, cutting out other people's costumes. Then for another six years, Kelvin worked in the workshops of various designers, painted portraits of passers-by on the streets of New York. This activity did not bring him any special income, but he gained experience. And in free evenings he created his portfolio.

In 1968, together with childhood friend Barry Schwartz, Calvin founded Calvin Klein, Ltd. in New York. The money for it was provided by Barry, and Klein always had ideas. And the "Great American Dream" of a teenager from Brooklyn came true and became a legend. Kelvin made his first collection and exhibited it on one of the floors of the hotel. There was a boutique one floor up. One day, the director of the boutique, going to work in the morning, accidentally pressed another button in the elevator. He left on the floor where the young designer was exhibiting his models. Kelvin's clothes shocked the businessman so much that he immediately made an order to the fashion designer in the amount of 50 thousand dollars. This was a real victory, the name of Calvin Klein becomes famous, and material independence gave "the opportunity to create your own fashion world."

Popular Calvin Klein Perfume:

The designer would later call the 70s of the 20th century “simply crazy”. Once in the bohemian society of "golden" youth, Kelvin, with the optimism characteristic of youth, indulges in all conceivable vices - alcoholism, drug experiments, and a chaotic personal life. But nevertheless, at the same time, the formation and development of their own brand takes place.

Starting his atelier with the production of men's outerwear, Klein gradually moves on to the design of clothing for women. In the 1970s, the designer adapted the classic men's suit for women's fashion. In 1970, he introduced the Pea Coat, a double-breasted short coat with wide lapels. This model became not only the hit of the season, but also determined the fashion of women's outerwear for almost a decade.

Clothing from Klein implemented the basic principle of American fashion: "The most modest dress can be the height of chic, since the decisive criterion of style is not what, but how it is sewn." So it's no surprise that in 1973 he was the youngest designer to win the prestigious Coty Award for "refined and impeccably tailored clothing."

In 1974, Klein created a collection of accessories and fur clothing. But he soon becomes uninterested in following the beaten path. And he is preparing his first "bomb", one of those that will periodically shake not only the fashion world, but also the moral foundations of American society.

In 1978, Calvin Klein created the world's first designer jeans. From inexpensive and casual clothes, he transferred them to the category of clothes for fashionable, stylish, liberated and sexy youth. An excellent cut perfectly fitted the figure and emphasized the length and slenderness of the legs. The Calvin Klein and Omega logos were placed on the back pocket.

He conceived advertising for his jeans as sexually provocative. In 1980, together with photographer Bruce Weber, an advertising poster for Calvin Klein jeans was created. A teenage girl, Brooke Shields, a future movie star and sex symbol, smiled invitingly from advertising photos, and below was the text: “Do you know that there is nothing between me and my jeans? ..” A loud scandal erupted in America, the designer was accused of using minors and in "shooting close to pornographic." The scandal was eliminated, jeans were taken out of production, and only in 1998 the company returned to the already classic model.

In 1982, Klein develops a collection of men's underwear. Famous rapper M. Mark and supermodel D. West are featured in the ad, which encourages wearing lingerie with a wide corset elastic band and the inscription "Calvin Klein". For the first time, the designer introduced a half-naked male body into advertising as an aesthetic element. And no matter how much his models are accused of being too sexy, Klein claims that he "designs underwear to make people look sexy."

Popular Calvin Klein Perfume:

In the 1980s, the fashion designer focused on the production of underwear and jeans. And the scandals that so often accompany his advertising become part of the image created by the designer. His poster "The Last Supper from Klein", which reproduced the famous biblical story, but with semi-nude models of both sexes in jeans, shocked puritan society. The church sued the designer for a million dollars, which had to be paid.

1992 is considered the birth date of the popular unisex youth style. It was then that Klein released an advertising poster with a semi-nude young model Kate Moss and rapper Marky Mark. The model in the image of "his girl" with natural beauty, "close to the consumer", and the musician resembled each other not only in hair, face and figure, but also in clothes. New clothes from the scandalous designer could be worn with equal success by teenagers of either sex. The idea was received with a bang and the youth showed their passion for the new style with their wallets.

In 1999, the fashion designer again provokes a scandal with his advertising. Klein demonstrates a new line - the release of underwear for children and teenagers. Provocative photos with children were considered frivolous. To avoid harsher accusations, the ad campaign was put on hold and the designer publicly apologized.

Meanwhile, Klein's company was booming, from a small atelier he built a multi-million dollar empire with an annual turnover of about $ 5 billion. Skillful marketing policy, which clearly created an advertising image and stable associations, deeply penetrated into the minds of buyers. Scandals and conflicts helped to create an original image of the brand, which has become a symbol of youth, sexuality and looseness. Moreover, the designer was one of the first to start dressing his clients "from and to" - from underwear to fashion accessories. Rooted in the US and Europe, in the 1990s the company actively moved to the east, opening its boutiques in Hong Kong, Jakarta, Kuwait.

One of the components of Klein's success is an instant reaction to changing trends in world fashion. On the threshold of the 21st century, he was one of the first to develop the military style. The designer produces knee-length pants, overcoats, knee-length skirts in khaki.

For his clothes, Calvin Klein has developed a number of fragrances, each of which has a double - a male and female scent: "Eternity" (1983), "Obsession" (1985), "Ventilation" (1986). Perfume scents subtly emphasize Klein's clothing style and are always a hit. Therefore, the Calvin Klein perfume line ranks first in the world in terms of the number of fakes. The most famous fragrance of the company "Contradiction" was released in 1998; as they say, it is designed for those who independently solve their problems.

Popular Calvin Klein Fragrances:

Despite the scandalous fame, Calvin Klein's contribution to the development of world fashion can hardly be overestimated. And this is noted by his fellow fashion designers. Three times he became the owner of the Kochi Award (1973, 1974, 1975). Four times he was awarded the national award of the United States in the field of fashion - "American Fashion Awards". President of the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America), Stan Herman, when presenting the next award, emphasized: “The award for contribution to the development of fashion is awarded to someone who has been in business for a long time, and no one doubts that Kelvin deserves this status.”

Having done away with the “turbulent” 1970s, Calvin Klein settled down a bit in his personal life. In 1986 he married his assistant Kelly Rector. The couple bought a house in East Hampton by the sea. The fashion designer leads a healthy lifestyle - jogging in the morning, swimming. And he devotes his free time to his favorite hobby - visiting exotic restaurants. The designer is especially attracted to Japanese cuisine. At the very least, he argues that good food is the main thing that makes it worth being rich and famous. And while Calvin Klein has a lot of ideas and far-reaching plans, he can be sure that he will earn money for the most exquisite dish of any cuisine in the world.
