International Day of the Elderly. When was the day of the elderly established

Everyone, sooner or later, comes face to face with old age. There are many benefits to being a senior. These include wisdom and experience.

So that the elderly do not feel lonely, in October 1990, the UN Assembly established the International Day of Older Persons.

When was Senior Citizens' Day established?

In the 1970s, scientists noticed that people around the world were aging rapidly.

It was then that they came to the conclusion that in old age, every person should have social and moral protection.

In 1982, questions about the problems of old age were first raised in Austria.

Representatives from different countries shared the experience of the life of their elders and listened to the recommendations of representatives of other countries.

In 1990, the UN listened to the assembly and adopted the international day of the elderly.

Holiday goals for the elderly

This is the brightest and kindest holiday. It is needed in our time. With it, you can draw the attention of the government to the problems that lie in wait for the elderly at every turn.

It is very important that the parliament adopts social laws for or needy pensioners. Everyone's life begins to change after retirement.

Due to the loss of a permanent place of work, a person stops expressing himself, so sometimes he can fall into. And to all this, the level of income is significantly reduced.

In every city there are medical institutions that provide free assistance to pensioners. This small step to improve people's lives was taken thanks to this holiday.

Pensions are gradually being increased to improve living standards. In the future, it is planned to create a program that will ensure a carefree old age for every pensioner.

One of the objectives of the holiday is to strengthen family ties, to help their elderly relatives. Respect for old age is one of the main components in the education of the younger generation.

Conclusion

The holiday of the elderly is needed in order to draw the attention of the highest authorities to the problems of old age, and attention and care for their elderly relatives must be paid every day.

Older people in today's society play an increasingly prominent role and seem to be more and more active members of it compared to how things were quite recently. In most countries of the civilized world, the level of medicine and the level of life expectancy are so high that people in old age sometimes experience a second youth. After retirement, they live not only for others, but also for themselves, go in for sports, travel and live quite an active and vibrant life. Of course, Russian pensioners cannot always afford it, but still, the situation is improving in our country, although slowly, but pensions are becoming an active and eventful time for many. Day of the Elderly in 2019: what date is the day of the elderly in Russia, what does this holiday mean in the world and how is it perceived by us.

What date will be the Day of the elderly in 2019

International Day of Older Persons (this is the official name of the holiday) is celebrated annually October 1.

As such, this holiday appeared at the level of the United Nations in 1990, and began to be celebrated in 1991. Russia decided to join the celebration in 1992, when a special decree was issued on this occasion, which included the Day of the Elderly on October 1 in the calendar of Russian holidays.

It is curious that the UN originally called the holiday in Russian the International Day for the Elderly, but this rude and not entirely correct expression for the Russian ear was quickly replaced with a more correct one.

At the UN level, the Day of the Elderly is always not just a formal date, but an occasion to recall how the world is changing and how the composition of the population is changing. According to the UN, at the moment the life expectancy in the world is more than 68 years, and by 2100 it will reach 81 years. Progress allows us to live longer and longer, and society needs to understand well what place more and more elderly people occupy in it, what role they play. In turn, this understanding should also appear in the elderly themselves.

Even the very definition of old age is likely to be rethought in the near future.

Alas, in Russia, the Day of the Elderly is often just an excuse for holding formal events, official congratulations for older people from government agencies. At the same time, the role of Russian elderly people in the life of our society is enormous. Often grandparents are responsible for the upbringing of their grandchildren; in many enterprises, older employees sometimes have no one to pass on their unique experience to. At the same time, the state cannot always appreciate the merits of pensioners and fully thank them for the contribution that they made with their active life to our common development.

Autumn for the celebration of the Day of the elderly, it seems, was chosen for a reason - it is believed that it is the period from September to November that is considered the golden time of the year, just like old age is the golden time of life.

The world has been officially celebrating the International Day of Older Persons since 1991, after the UN in December 1990 proclaimed October 1 as the Day of the Elderly. On that day, representatives of the already existing Trust Fund on Aging noted a decrease in the number of contributions from states and organizations, and also called for older people not to be discounted, assuring that pensioners are still able to contribute to the development of society with their experience and wisdom. And it was once again announced about the rapid aging of the world's population - according to the data for 2018, there are 42 million pensioners in Russia alone, and every year there are more and more of them.

history of the holiday

Congratulating the elderly was first started back in the 70s of the 20th century in America. Scientists of that time realized how valuable all the information that the older generation passes on to the younger one, and decided to convey this idea to everyone: schoolchildren, students, politicians and businessmen. And so it was decided to congratulate the pensioners - once again thank them for everything they have done for the development of culture, society, economy and politics.

In 1982, the First World Assembly was held in Vienna, one of the themes of which was the aging of the population. Representatives of a dozen countries spoke at the event - they told how the elderly live in them, what kind of support they receive and, most importantly, how all of them - citizens aged 60 and over - help their country. Those present made a statement, shared experiences, argued and made important decisions. One of them is the establishment of an official date for the celebration of the Day of the elderly.

The United Nations supported this initiative, and since 1991 October 1 is the international holiday of all grandparents.

In Russia, this holiday has another name - the Day of Kindness and Respect. In our country, on October 1, not just congratulate the elderly, on this day the younger generation is once again reminded of how important it is to remember and respect pensioners. These people once gave us life, raised us, raised us and made us what we are. And now some of them cannot do without support - they are like small children who really need our care and attention. That is why the symbol of the Day of the Elderly in Russia is an open palm, a sign of kindness and help.

Since 2002, the UN has devoted at least one meeting to the issue of older people. Each time, topics are prepared, speeches are organized, those present discuss what their colleagues have said, argue and make decisions.

  • For the first time the representatives of the participating countries discussed the problems of aging. Everyone who came to the event listened to stories about the difficulties that older people in Europe, the USA, Asia and Africa face, and offered their solutions.
  • in 2003, those present discussed the issue of promoting the problem of aging. In particular, options were proposed to strengthen the links between the Madrid International Plan of Action on Aging and the Millennium Development Goals” - these are commitments made by UN member countries in achieving the Millennium Development Goals in the field of peace and security; development; environmental protection; human rights, democracy and governance; protecting the vulnerable; meeting the needs of Africa; strengthening the UN.
  • In 2004, the problems of older people in society were discussed: the difficulties they have to face. So it was proposed to focus on the partnership of generations: older and younger.
  • The theme for 2005 is aging in the new millennium. Thus, during the speech, the participants of the event focused on the poverty of pensioners, the difficulties faced by older women, and the types of development of the system of assistance to people over 60 years old.
  • in 2006, a plan was discussed to improve the quality of life of older people - so that after retirement, men and women would not have to drastically change their way of life, which would necessarily affect their health.
  • in 2007, those present tried to find solutions to the problems and realize the opportunities associated with aging.
  • In 2008, they talked about the rights of older people. It is no secret that in some countries it is extremely difficult for pensioners to exist precisely because the modern world is poorly adapted to meet the needs of men and women with limited mobility.
  • In 2009, they talked about a society for people of all ages. Ideally, everything that the world offers us should be accessible to people of all generations.
  • In 2010, we summed up the results of the work on the Millennium Declaration - what we managed to bring to life, and what needs more time.
  • In 2011, aging was discussed as a global process. As part of the Madrid +10 program, we looked for ways to expand opportunities and solve problems.
  • In 2012, longevity was discussed: a healthy lifestyle, usefulness to society - everything that would allow an elderly person to continue to exist comfortably.
  • The theme for 2013 is "The Future We Want". Elderly people from different countries told what changes would make their lives happier and more comfortable.
  • 2014 - "Leave no one behind." They discussed the problems of abandoned older people - those from whom friends, relatives, and the state turned their backs.
  • In 2015, the world's largest cities were assessed for sustainability and openness to older people.

World Seniors Day

On October 1, many countries of the world will congratulate their grandparents. For example, in the USA it is National Grandparents Day, which sounds very cute in translation - “Grandparents' Day”. In China, October 1 is the "Double Ninth Festival" and in Japan, "Respect for the Aged Day". As you can see, the names are different, but the essence of the holiday is the same - once again to remind the elderly that they are important, needed and loved.

Today is a special day
Day of the wise and respectable,
Day of experienced and strict,
Day of the good, smart, prominent.

And let the years pass
Such is their nature.
But you have something to remember
In any season.

And maybe a memoir
Write to you in the evenings:
Let the grandchildren read
How did you start your life?

Read and wonder
What were you like:
Worked, studied
They were friends and loved.

Be friends and love
Learn today too.
We wish you happiness
And good health.

We wish you a lot:
One hundred more summers to live,
Look ahead with a smile
Don't worry about the past.

So that the heart is not naughty,
For children to take care
So that everything that you have in mind
You were able to make it happen!
**************

At least for the years "over 50"
Still 17 in my heart
Eyes shining with confidence
You don't have to be afraid of your age!

For happiness there is one secret -
Be kind, do not hide evil in yourself,
To love the whole world and the sun light,
And every day with its sunset!

special day on the calendar
October starts:
Today the elderly
We congratulate everyone from the bottom of our hearts!

On your strength and shoulders
Houses and streets grew.
Their tireless hands
Beauty was created for us!

You happiness, strength, kindness, warmth,
Good health and peace.
So that all worldly important blessings
Enough for your age!

Life goes on, adding age to everyone,
But it's not all about years.
This holiday is wise and serious,
But with a little sadness in his eyes.

Happy holiday to you, elderly people,
You have more joys than worries.
Let them respect you, honor and love you very much.
May every year be successful!

Happiness to you, health, tenderness
Grandchildren, self-care.
May they give happiness and patience
Dear people, you are in destiny.
