The professional holiday of energy industry workers in Russia is celebrated on December 22. The basis is the decree of the PVS of the USSR of 05/23/1966. It is easy to explain what date and why exactly in December - this is the opening day of the VIII Congress of Soviets, at which the landmark GOELRO plan was adopted. There were attempts to move the holiday and make the date floating - the third Sunday of December. But power engineers are stubborn people, and therefore they continued to celebrate their day on the 22nd. And in 2015, the date of the holiday was returned, fixing it for December 22.
Power industry in Russia
The basic branch of the domestic economy provides energy (electricity and heat) to the domestic needs of the country, and also exports electricity. Not only the successful economic development of the Russian Federation, but also the energy security of the country depends on the sustainable development of the industry.
The starting point for the formation of the Russian power industry system was the GOELRO plan. Designed for 15 years, it was completed ahead of schedule in 1930. In the middle of the 20th century, the industry began to develop taking into account discoveries in nuclear energy. They built nuclear power plants, used the hydropower potential of Siberia.
It should be recognized that the main objects of the electric power industry belong to the Soviet period. In the 1990s, the process of capacity renewal slowed down significantly. Domestic energy companies lagged well behind those in developed countries, there were no incentives to improve efficiency in the system, and most importantly, due to depreciation of funds and poor control over the implementation of safety rules, the likelihood of accidents increased.
Changes began in the 2000s. The transformations were carried out taking into account the resolution “On reforming the electric power industry of the Russian Federation”. Now in the country, prices in the electricity market are formed in accordance with supply/demand. The structure of the industry was also reformed: the natural monopoly and competitive functions were separated. The assets were combined into two types of companies: the wholesale market (OGK) and territorial generating companies (TGK). The Unified Energy System of the Russian Federation (UES of Russia) is represented by 70 regional systems forming seven unified systems.

It is difficult to overestimate the importance of the work of power engineers, whose tireless work creates one of the most necessary benefits - heat, which provides comfort in homes, schools, hospitals, offices.
Historically, the event goes back to 1966. On May 23, a decree was issued on the establishment of a holiday, which was timed to coincide with the memory of the day the plan was formed, providing for widespread electrification. The latter was compiled in the 20th year of the last century at the next Congress of Soviets, held on December 22. In the 80s, the date was moved. Until 2015, Energy Day was the third Sunday in December. The industry experts themselves continued to follow the traditions, organizing festive events on the usual date.
In 2015, the government of the Russian Federation issued a decree re-postponing the holiday to December 22. The event is widespread not only in the Russian Federation. On the same date, power engineers are congratulated in other states - in Armenia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan. On the territory of some other countries, a tradition has been preserved to celebrate a celebration dedicated to employees of the energy industry on a floating date.
